Below is the text of a letter that Miriam Bliss McIntyre wrote to my mother, Louise Hause, after my father died.  I was a toddler when he passed away, and I have no memory of him. – Irene L. Hause

Dear Louise:

Here at the office tonight, alone, I have only this plain paper to use in writing to you.  I do want to write to you right now.

My cousin, Mrs. Huebener, has just written me that there was a Memorial Service for Lodie last Sunday.  She just happened to read the announcement in the paper.

Memorial Services

My dear — my heart aches for you for I know that what this first shock means!  Know, however, that faith to believe that Lodie is in a happy place with the Lord and that one day you will be with him too will help you adjust to this temporary separation.

How great a thing he did, to give his life for a great cause so that you and your daughter and her children can have a chance to live in peace!

Some years ago a friend of mine reminded me “It isn’t what happens to us but what we do about it that matters.”  You have Irene and your mother and your relatives to live and work for.  You have Irene to train and educate so that she will be a fine, gracious woman who will have no hate in her heart for other peoples.  You have her to guide so that she will be the kind of woman of whom Lodie would be proud.

The next few months are going to take all the courage and faith of which you are capable.  I know that you can show yourself and your family that you can “take it” without hysteria or bitterness.

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.  You already have my prayers and deep sympathy.

Affectionately, your friend

Miriam B. McIntyre
